Independent Health Care Service Pty Ltd (IHCS) was established in 1992 by a small group of nurses. At the time, they identified that funding restraints on the existing services meant that there were many people living in the community with unmet care needs.

The community’s need for trained Support Workers (Carers) along with Registered Nurses was identified, so that a complete package of care could be accessed through a single organisation. This formed the basis of Independent Health Care Service’s service delivery.

In order to ensure that the service was truly accessible at all times an after-hours communication system was initiated which enabled clients and organisations to request assistance 24 hours a day, by simply dialing the normal phone number.

IHCS now provides nursing, personal care, home help and handyman services to many clients across Southern Tasmania and the Launceston area in Northern Tasmania. Many of these services are delivered under Government funding agreements, such as the programs funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Social Services, along with services that are provided on a privately purchased basis.

Currently IHCS employs around 235 Personnel that includes Registered & Enrolled Nurses, Personal Carers and Home and Garden Maintenance Workers. Our staff have been carefully selected and orientated to work within the community in Tasmania.

In 1999, Independent Health Care Service branched out to become a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) with the Tasmanian State Training Authority, which allows us to conduct fully accredited Personal Carer Training courses. The RTO continues to provide high quality, accredited training courses delivered by industry competent trainers and assessors.

IHCS seeks to maintain a high quality of service which is client focused, based on assessed needs and the client’s goals. IHCS also strives to adequately support its staff members and provide an environment which is conducive to both personal and professional growth.
